4/1/09 Boys Golf Falls to Rival Skyline
LAKE CHABOT: The boys golf team fell to 0 - 4 on Tuesday at the hands of Skyline. After two losses to Pinole Valley and one to South San Francisco, the Bulldogs opened the OAL schedule in disappointing fashion with a 278 - 265 defeat. To start the season, the team showed great resolve in a home and away with Pinole. After losing by nearly 100 strokes at Richmond Country Club, the team responded the following week to close with 30 on their home course at Lake Chabot. The following week the team flirted with their first victory, but lost by just 3 strokes to South San Francisco.
On Tuesday, in a highly anticipated rematch from last season, the Bulldogs looked to assert their dominance against a league rival. Skyline had other plans, however. Depending on a young core, including three upstart freshmen, Skyline did not appear short on experience.
It was Kyle Yamashita, however, a senior, who again led the way. Matt Cameron, who last year battled Yamashita in league play, was no match on this day, posting a 50 to Yamashita's 42, which set the tone for the rest of the match. Pete Stathakos, battling an injured hip, limped his way to his best match of the season by firing a 52, while his rival, freshman Ian Dort, shot a 55. In the second group, Jack Tenley and Brian Chung were no match for Scott Yamashita and Brian Cheng. Tenley fell 58 - 48, while in the battle of Brians, Chung came up short 62 - 54. Kahliem Giles, the number 5 seed and looking to improve his standing, had his best round of the season with a solid 56, finishing with an impressive bogey on the last.
In an informal practice match on the short course, freshman Chel Toscano played against Chakume, a senior, who won 2-and-1. After misfiring on two shots out of bounds on the 8th, Toscano belted a beautiful drive that left him only 8 feet from the hole. Unfortunately, after the penalties for two lost balls, he could not capitalize.
Tech will look to rebound and reassert their league dominance on Tuesday, April 14th against Skyline at Chabot. Coach Raeke tried to salvage positives from the loss. "Each week we seem to make small strides, but have not had our breakthrough yet."
